Help finding that 2nd Wedding Dress

2011-09-14 | Dennis Gruetter

Looking to get a second wedding dress but don't know where to start? This week I sit down with Harper Della-Piana of SEAMS Couture and Andrea Lown of SmartBrideBoutique.com to to get several burning questions answered.

Why should I get a second wedding dress?

Harper: For various reasons, not simply to change your style for the second part of the day. Being able to get out of your very heavy and elaborate gown in order to enjoy your party is a big reason to plan a second look. If your gown is a family heirloom or your wedding is on a very hot day then it's a practical reason too.

How much should I spend on a second dress?

Harper: Buy a second dress you love and one that you would definitely wear again to a great party! While your gown is preserved and stored for future generations, your second dress is a great thing to have for New Year's Eve or other formal events.

What is an appropriate time to change into my second dress?

Harper: After the Ceremony and all the formal photos have been taken. Change before or after dinner for dancing, it depends on how your event schedule is arranged.

Does the dress have to be white or can it be any color?

Harper: There are no rules for color anymore! If you still want to feel 'Bridey' then stick with whites, or change into your favorite color.

How fancy should a second dress be?

Andrea: Your second dress can be just as fancy as the first if you want it to be. Maybe you just want something more streamlined for dancing, but equally as elegant. Or, something shorter to show off your statement shoes - it all depends on you and your ceremony and reception venues.

Are there any other tips you can offer to buying a second wedding dress?

Andrea: Yes! Make sure that the change over between dresses is relatively stress free. If changing takes more than 15 minutes, you'll be missing out on your own reception. Make sure that a couple of your bridesmaids or friends know how to help you in and out of your gowns including bustles as this is often a last minute surprise for brides.

Also, keep in mind how and where you are going to store the first gown once you change, and whether the same shoes and accessories will match both dresses.

I heard about something called a transformer dress. Can you tell me what that is?

Harper: A Transformer would be a dress with a removable train or over skirt. It has a simple removable piece that changes the gown instantly into a second look. ie: huge ball skirt comes off and the Bride is wearing a great white mini dress underneath.

Where is a good place to find these dresses?

Harper: Call ahead at your local Bridal Salons, if you're not finding it then call a Designer and have it made to order! That way it will have every detail exactly the way you want, for approximately the same price.
